Certain laws and regulations can be deliberately and proactively used to drive innovation and create broader prosperity. This is particularly relevant for fast-growing technologies such as AI.
Experimentation is essential for this: both for companies wishing to test new AI applications and for governments wanting to make regulations future-proof and innovation-friendly.
The space for experimentation is increasingly taking shape through instruments such as testbeds, pilot projects, or regulatory sandboxes: environments in which groundbreaking ideas can tested in a controlled setting.
However, the multitude of terms sows confusion: what exactly do these instruments mean and how do they differ from one another? In this brAInfood, we provide an overview of the various instruments, examine the legal basis, and present several examples.
This brAInfood was developed in collaboration with the Social and Economic Council of Flanders (SERV).
