‘Artificial intelligence’ is a term that is increasingly being used. It is part of our daily life: the virtual assistant on your smartphone, home automation systems, music recommendations on Spotify, ... But what does ‘artificial intelligence’ mean exactly?

Why should I read this?

There is no clear definition of artificial intelligence, yet it's often used in media and policy documents without explaining how the term was interpreted by the organization or person in question.

Therefore, the Knowledge Centre Data & Society compared various descriptions of the term ‘artificial intelligence’. By doing so, we hope to foster the debate about artificial intelligence, and what the term does or does not mean.

  3. Lastly, most descriptions suggest that machines cannot be more intelligent than humans as machines are developed and implemented by humans. Thus, machine intelligence is always dependent upon human intelligence!
