Why should I read this?
There is no clear definition of artificial intelligence, yet it's often used in media and policy documents without explaining how the term was interpreted by the organization or person in question.
Therefore, the Knowledge Centre Data & Society compared various descriptions of the term ‘artificial intelligence’. By doing so, we hope to foster the debate about artificial intelligence, and what the term does or does not mean.
What can I find out when reading this?
Based on this comparison, the Knowledge Centre Data & Society concludes the following:
- There are three major categories of descriptions. Some descriptions emphasise the human aspect, others focus more on the technology itself or the intelligence of the AI system itself.
- Because these different accents and nuances can lead to a variety of discussions around artificial intelligence. Therefore, it is important to clarify your interpretation when using the term.
- Lastly, most descriptions suggest that machines cannot be more intelligent than humans as machines are developed and implemented by humans. Thus, machine intelligence is always dependent upon human intelligence!
