The European Data Act became applicable on 12 September 2025 and is part of the European strategy for data. In a world where technology is developing at lightning speed, this strategy puts citizens first by taking European values and rights into account as part of every policy decision. In practice, this strategy aims to give citizens and businesses more control over their data. After all, data is an essential resource for economic growth and societal progress in general.
The Data Act is an important part of the European strategy for data. It creates a more coherent regulatory framework that facilitates data sharing and therefore also data reuse within the European Union. This new legislation gives consumers and businesses access to their data generated by connected devices, which together form a network known as the Internet of Things or ‘IoT’. It also enables them to share this data with another company.
