Serendipity Cards

The Serendipity card set is a practical design tool that helps you think about how to design for serendipity: unexpected but valuable discoveries of ideas, information, people, or possibilities.

The card set is based on academic research into affordances for serendipity: the idea that you cannot force serendipity, but you can design environments that make it more likely to happen. The Serendipity card set starts from three overarching design principles that can support serendipity:

  • Diversifiability
    variety, heterogeneity, unexpected combinations
  • Traversability
    movement, detours, alternative routes, intersections
  • Sensoriability
    stimuli, contrasts, signals, details

The Serendipity cards are context-independent. This means that they can be used for designing digital, physical, or organisational contexts. The cards can be used, for example, for designing a website interface or the layout of a public space, but also in an educational context to critically reflect on design.

How does it work?

The cards can be used for various purposes. To delve deeper into an idea during design workshops or brainstorming sessions, strategic moments, educational contexts, ...

A simple basic workflow is:

  1. Lay the cards open and explore them.
  2. Read the examples.
  3. Choose cards that appeal, challenge, or resonate.
  4. Translate the principles to your own context.
  5. Note down ideas, insights, or questions.

You can apply the cards in a workshop format. You can download the script for this below.

What is in the card set?

The card set includes 37 cards, including:

  • principle cards
  • concrete examples
  • reflection cards
  • instruction cards

Each card is designed to be easy to use in practice: compact, and conversation-oriented. The examples help people connect the principles to their own context and think analogically across domains.
