AI Act transparency obligations

Introduction

The EU AI Act introduces transparency obligations for providers and deployers of certain AI systems. These obligations have applied since 2 August 2026. For some AI systems placed on the market before that date, a transitional period applies until 2 December 2026.

To help organisations understand which transparency obligations under Article 50 of the AI Act apply to them, the Knowledge Centre Data & Society developed this guide. It takes into account both the type of AI system involved and the organisation’s role as provider and/or deployer.

The tool

The guide is structured around three checkpoints. First, you determine whether the AI system falls within the scope of the AI Act. To help with this, you can use our tool, “The EU AI Act in 6 steps”. Next, you identify which transparency obligations apply to you as a provider and/or deployer. Finally, you check the general requirements that the information you provide must meet.

For each potential transparency obligation, you work through three steps: does the obligation apply, is there an exception and what do you need to do in practice? Each obligation should be assessed separately. A single AI system may trigger several transparency obligations, and you may act as both provider and deployer in relation to the same system
