Data Ethics Decision Aid (DEDA)

This tool was created by the Utrecht Data School in collaboration with data analysts from the Municipality of Utrecht. It consists of various methods that you can use at the start of a project. The aim is to document ethical issues and decisions in this regard, for example, to provide accountability towards stakeholders.

The Utrecht Data School is part of Utrecht University.

What you should know before reading further:

  • Target group: data analysts, project managers and policy makers
  • Process phase: implementation, evaluation and iteration
  • System component: data usage and processing, users, context of AI system
  • Price indication: freely available

Method

Brainstorm sessions form the basis of this method. There is also a questionnaire that you can complete. With a manual you can steer the brainstorming sessions in the right direction.

Result

This tool does not guarantee an ethical end result, nor does it provide a certificate. The tool does, however, provide guidance for making ethical aspects easily part of a project, enabling discussion and communication of these aspects.
