New Theme: Digital Sovereignty

With rising geopolitical tensions, growing privacy discussions, and concerns regarding the (excessive) impact of American tech companies on Flemish businesses and governments, digital sovereignty is increasingly high on the agenda. In November 2025, all member states of the European Union even signed a Declaration on European Digital Sovereignty. Yet, this remains a vague concept. What exactly is it? And what isn't it? And how can you take concrete and realistic steps towards sovereignty without harming your own operations?

What information can you find?

The Knowledge Centre Data & Society makes digital sovereignty a priority. Not only do we critically examine our own digital dependencies, but we will also help Flemish organisations develop their own vision and strategy to gain more control over data and digital technology.

What can you expect?

In 2026, you can expect a vision paper on what digital sovereignty is (and isn't). In the autumn, a number of tools are also planned to help you assess your digital sovereignty, as well as best practices to take steps forward.

In addition, The Knowledge Centre Data & Society is organising various events around this theme. On Thursday, June 11, 2026, we are organising a meetup of the learning community where we will discuss digital sovereignty.
