DataKlap®

Introduction

Bringing together people with different technical and non-technical backgrounds to collaborate on data-driven innovation can be challenging. To support this, imec-SMIT, Vrije Universiteit Brussel, developed DataKlap®.

DataKlap® is a practical method that helps you visualise complex data processes in a clear and structured way. By making these processes easy to understand and discuss, DataKlap® builds a shared perspective among stakeholders, fosters collaboration, and supports the development of sustainable, data-driven solutions.

The method

At the core of the method is the DataKlap® Map: a visual overview of the key actors, tasks and data flows in a specific ecosystem. The map uses a set of standardised symbols (based on BPMN 2.0) to show who collects, shares and processes data, and how these interactions are connected. The method follows five clear steps:

  1. Define: Set clear boundaries to the map by defining its scope and purpose
  2. Inform: Gather information on the data ecosystem to be visualised in your map
  3. Build: Create a visual representation of the data ecosystem using the DataKlap® symbols
  4. Validate: Review the map with domain experts or stakeholders to ensure completeness and accuracy
  5. Apply: use the map to align teams, guide decisions and support data-driven innovation

Getting started

Thanks to its flexibility, DataKlap® can be used in a wide range of contexts to support data-driven innovation within your organisation or project. You can use it to:

  • Kickstart strategic conversations about how data flows through your organisation or ecosystem, and clarify roles and dependencies
  • Analyse data processes to identify bottlenecks, blind spots or inefficiencies
  • Support informed decision-making early in the design of new data-driven products or services
  • Strengthen collaboration across internal teams and external partners by creating a shared understanding of your data ecosystem
