Dynamics of AI Principles

There are many different sets of principles that can be used to develop ethical AI. The AI Ethics Lab has developed a free toolbox that gives an overview of the different sets of principles that exist and where you can find them. All these principles come together in their own tool with which you can integrate and/or evaluate the principles in your AI system.

The AI Ethics Lab tries to detect ethical issues in the development of AI systems and to resolve these issues through research and consultation. In doing so, they actively bring ethics to the industry.

What you want to know before you read on
  • For whom: everyone within companies that develop tech and develop the ethical strategy
  • Process phase: development of new tech or upgrading of existing tech
  • System part: Broad application across the whole system
  • Price indication: PDF version freely available, printed version is paid

Method

The online tool consists of three parts: an interactive map, an overview of principles per sector and location and an interactive questionnaire for the principles. In addition, you can download a guide with an explanation and an example and another guide on how to use the interactive questionnaire (the box).

The lab has arranged all principles according to the Principlism framework, which consists of 3 main principles: autonomy, preventing harm and promoting good outcomes and justice. These three main principles have intrinsic value and all other principles are only instrumental to the main principles to protect and strengthen them. Conflicting main principles lead to an ethical dilemma, conflicting instrumental principles do not. With this division, you can organise and evaluate the principles that are important in your AI system.

In addition, with the help of the interactive questionnaire, you can give weight to the different principles. And thus create a visual overview of which principles you can still work on.

Result

With this toolbox, you can make a handy overview of the principles that your AI does/do not comply with and determine an ethical strategy on that basis.
